Safety First

We've all heard the phrase "If you play with fire, you're going to get burned." We'll be the first to agree that phrase is nothing but true. As professionals, however, we have the utmost safety in mind when it comes to our audiences, your venues, and our performers to ensure a great time for everyone involved.

Our fire safety guidelines are outlined in brief below. Our full 18 page fire safety packet is available upon request; please use the form on our contact page to send us an e-mail.

Trained and Insured Safety Crew
Everyone associated with Incendium Arts is not only skilled in what they do but also fully trained in fire safety precautions and first aid procedures.  We personally train our safety crew, guards, and technicians to ensure their familiarity with our show and ability to respond to any situation that may arise during practices and performances. In addition, our troupe carries a specialty performer's insurance plan.

Fire safeties are those who are always on guard with a fire towel and extinguisher in case either is needed.  They also help manage the crowd, making sure that the audience is far enough away from the performers and fuel station to ensure  everyone's safety.  Technicians assist us with our fire drums and other equipment used during performances.  Each is crossed trained in all areas of safety.

Safety Equipment Costuming
Incendium never leaves home (or practices at home) without having all necessary fire safety equipment.  Our safety kit includes:  duvetyne/fire towel, two types of fire extinguishers, kitty litter for any fuel spills, a first aid kit, and MSDS for all materials used.  Everyone associated with Incendium is trained to use all safety equipment. Synthetic materials should never be used or worn while performing with fire.  The safest materials to use are those made of Kevlar or Nomex; however, natural materials such as leather, cotton, and wool are safe and easy to use in costuming purposes as well.

Fuels Performance Area
We use white gas, Ultra Pure Lamp Oil, or a mixture of the two for all fire props.  For breathing fire, we use strictly Ultra Pure Lamp Oil for its high flash point to ensure the highest possible degree of safety for our breathers.  All fuel is set away from the audience and smoking areas, and is secured before, during, and after all performances.

The performance area must be clear both vertically and horizontally of flammable or hazardous materials.  It must also have some type of barrier to keep the audience a safe distance from all flaming materials and fuels.   We inspect all venues prior to each performance to make sure all requirements can be met.
